The Biodiversity Conservation and Rural Livelihood Improvement Project [BCRLIP] for the Little Rann of Kutch Landscape including the Wild Ass Sanctuary is a World Bank funded programme. The Government of Gujarat vide Government Resolution No. WLP-2006-136-G1 (Part-II) Sachivalaya, Gandhinagar dated 21st August, 2008 has constituted a Biodiversity Conservation and Rural Livelihood Improvement Project (BCRLIP) Society. The BCRLIP Society has been registered under Society Registration Act, 1860 vide No.GUJ/1618/Gandhinagar Dt.07/02/2009 and registered under Bombay Trust Registration Act, 1950 vide No.F/1573/Gandhinagar Dt.07/02/2009.

The Biodiversity Conservation and Rural Livelihood Improvement Project (BCRLIP) visualizes a multi sector and, seemingly antagonistic, multi-theme project on a landscape which has often been talked about but not addressed before in a time bound project mode.


Goals of the BCRLIP:

  1. To strengthen and mainstream biodiversity conservation at the Little Rann of Kutchchh landscape level by improving rural livelihoods, learning and its replication, through participatory approaches.
  2. To reduce man-animal conflicts about damaging crops by the wild animals through participatory approaches.
  3. To improve habitats occupied by the wildlife in LRK landscape, providing better foods and drinking water facilities.
  4. To improve livelihoods of the local communities including salt workers, fishermen and grazers by providing better livelihood infrastructures.
  5. To reduce negative impact of local communities on the LRK landscape through participatory approaches.
  6. To promote community based eco-tourism activities.

Main objectives of the BCRLIP:

  1. To mainstreaming the traditional knowledge in conservation and livelihood generation.
  2. To establish improved information technology, communication network to support conservation and livelihood planning.
  3. Landscape level research and studies to fill the knowledge gaps. Effective management of Wild-Ass Sanctuary.
  4. Promotion of educational and awareness campaigns, Capacity building and training programme for staff and local communities.
  5. To support and promote community based eco-tourism.
  6. To reduce man-animal conflicts.
  7. To develop policy for use of natural resources and for allocation of water from canal networks for maintenance of regional ecological stability.
  8. To reduce negative impact of salt manufacturing activities, fish catching activities and grazing activities, resulting in degradation of wildlife habitats.
